Forward flight in Wardogs: gaining speed without losing height

Tilt the rotor disc and some of its lift goes into speed instead of holding you up. Every pilot learns this by flying into the ground at least once.

What is happening

The cyclic only tilts the rotor disc. Cologne TM describes the effect: tilt it far in any direction and lift spills that way, so the aircraft sinks and then streams off in that direction. OnMapleWings explains the same thing as the resultant lift vector: bank or pitch over and less of the lift points up, so you descend unless you raise the nose, add collective, or both.

How to get moving

  1. From a stable hover, nudge the nose forward a little.
  2. Add collective as the aircraft starts to sink. If you are already at full collective, pitch down less.
  3. Once you have speed, ease the pitch back toward level.
  4. In turns, add collective as you bank: the steeper the bank, the more you need (Sim Controls).
  5. Start slowing well before where you want to stop.

Turning faster

Sim Controls builds a fast turn in three stages: roll alone is slow; roll plus pitching back is much quicker; roll, pitch back and a yaw input to flick the tail round is the quickest. A gentle turn at around 220 km/h can even gain a little speed by giving up some height, while a maximum-rate turn scrubs off a lot of speed that takes a long time to get back.

The drill

Fly 400 m north to the far pad without going above 15 m, then land on it under 2 m/s. The height limit forces you to manage the sink as you tilt forward instead of climbing out of trouble.
